A fresh start

The usual apologies for absences apply.

The new academic year has started with a bang, and things are going fine so far.

We've had the usual teething problems with the new start - lecturers forgetting to turn up for their relevant seminars and the students applying the usual 'if he's not here by quarter past we're doing a runner' rule*

Otherwise it's all cool. I like my PBL group, my GP surgery placement and my tutors.

On the plus side, I've also had a promotion in my bar job, and have been made a bar supervisor. It means more pay, more guaranteed hours and more CV enhancing skills.

Even better, it pays weekly.

On the whole, everything is going a lot better this year than this time last year. But I'm sure I will have just gone and jinxed that one now...

*Does this apply to other students at other universities too?

Of course. If it's a dull lecture, it's been known to become the 5 minute rule.

In our classes we generally run by the 15 minute rule, but some of the Americans on the course try the 10 minute rule. It gets complicated. Not that there is much else to do out at the vet school farm...

Not if your a silly bugger like me who decides that in addition to working 40 hours a week to study 16 hours a week via distant learning for a graduate diploma I don't have to face lectures just an huge pile of text book and no motivation, its amazing the things you can do to get out of self directed study, my fridge has never been cleaner

At Imperial I've had lecturers turn up 40 mins after the start time - and 80% of the class is still there!! I went and almost finished my lunch once, only to be interrupted by a call from a friend that "the lecture had started". Another time a lecturer turned up and said "we need to reschedule this lecture", but obviously that never happened. The thing is if you have lectures in a row you might as well just sit and chat to your friends ... because people here don't study until exam time.

It's great that your year's started so well. I'm a fresher this year on a PBL Medicine course having just done my A levels. Annoyingly, 2 of our PBL group didn't appear for our first session so I now have far more work to do than I should. Any hints and tips for surviving PBL would be greatly appreciated. (And yes, the 15 minute rule was applied to our first lecture)

We use the rule at college as well. Priceless. Glad to hear everything is going well, it'll be worth it when you get to graduate!!!

It was the "10 minute rule" in my corner, it's still used at our postgrad teaching sessions.

We have the 15 minute rule. Once, everyone was packed and ready to leave, and then the professor walked in at the 14-minute mark.

We have it too here in Alberta, and some people in our lectures are real stickers to this. Sometime profs will walk in at the last possible sec just to see who stayed.

It's the 15 minute rule here, although some profs will get angry if you leave, claiming that we're supposed to wait 20 or more.
